> Schlitt, Heinrich (1849–1923)

German illustrator Heinrich Schlitt (1849–1923) was born in Biebrich-Mosbach in Nassau in 1849. He is best known for his humorous illustrations and designs featuring dwarves, sagas and fairy tales. Schlitt first received teaching from Wiesbaden artist Kaspar Kögler, then went on to study at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich with Wilhelm Lindenschmit from 1875.

Schlitt worked successfully as an illustrator for the Illustrated Newspaper and the magazines Overland and Sea, Daheim and Schalk—his work became well known to the public through these magazines. He also worked as one of principal artists for the ceramics firm Villeroy and Boch, in particular designing drinking vessels, which are now highly collectable. His highly regarded painted frescoes also adorn the walls of the Rathskeller (town hall) in Munich and Wiesbaden.
