Born in Biebrich-Mosbach in Nassau in 1849, Heinrich Schlitt is best known for his humorous illustrations and designs featuring dwarves, sagas and fairy tales. Schlitt first received teaching from Wiesbaden artist Kaspar Kögler, then went on to study at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich with Wilhelm Lindenschmit from 1875—the date of this drawing.Schlitt worked successfully as an illustrator for the Illustrated Newspaper and the magazines Overland and Sea, Daheim and Schalk—his work became well known to the public through these magazines. He also worked as one of principal artists for the ceramics firm Villeroy and Boch, in particular designing drinking vessels, which are now highly collectable. His highly regarded painted frescoes also adorn the walls of the Rathskeller (town hall) in Munich and Wiesbaden. Here Schlitt has drawn a number studies of Medieval German costume features, including headpieces and jewellery. The distinctive heavy outlining to some of the illustrations give the appearance of medieval stained glass artwork—and indeed one is inscribed 'Nach eine Glascheibe' or 'After a glass pane'. Each illustration is inscribed in German, including: 'Goldkappe mit seinen Schleier darmuster c.1490' (gold cap with its veil patterns); 'Goldhaube mit Schleien—eine Ohrmuschel mit Perlen besetzt circa 1490' (gold hood with loops—an ear shell with pearls circa 1490) and 'Edelmann c.1480 mit Goldkette' (nobleman c.1480 with gold necklace). The drawing is presented in a cream window mount, secured at the top corners with hinging tape.

An original 19th-century pen & ink drawing, Pickford Robert Waller, Knight Aries Zodiac.

This humorous pen and ink drawing is by the distinguished designer and collector Pickford Robert Waller (1849–1930). As such, he contributed to the arts of naval victory, despite Smirke himself making no secret of his own democratic opinions. This design features a number of cameo portraits and bears the motto 'splendor septentriones,' which can mean 'the splendour of the seven stars' or 'the splendour of the North’. Allegorical figures from classical antiquity are used to give the design stature and gravitas—with Athena or Minerva (goddess of wisdom, craft, and war) to the right and Asclepius (hero and god of medicine) to the left, and possibly Marcus Aurelius on horseback in the centre. This design is very similar to other commemorative plates by Smirke dating from 1803, such as his famous ‘The Victory of the Nile’ (National Portrait Gallery, London), engraved by John Landseer, which features medallion portraits of Lord Nelson and his fourteen naval captains, flanked by allegorical figures of Fame and Nile—in tribute to Nelson's victory over the French at the Battle of the Nile in 1798.This beautiful study has a sensitivity and charm which is lost in the more grand and formal finished, engraved plates.

This is one of two drawings by Smirke that we have for sale, which we acquired as a pair.

An original c.1818 graphite drawing, George Arnald ARA, At the Theatre, Paris.

A wonderful small sketch by George Arnald ARA (1763–1841) showing a theatre interior in post-Napoleonic Paris, with figures treading the boards in the foreground. This is one of a set of five Paris subjects we have for sale, likely executed on Arnald's 1818 tour of France. The figures depicted, Edwin and Angelina (from the ballad of the same name by 18th-century novelist Oliver Goldsmith), are painted with a tenderness and elegance that are a testament to this skill—shining out almost luminously from the sepia gloom of the hermit's cave.

The painting captures an exchange full of promise: Angelina on the right is disguised as a male pilgrim on a journey of repentance, believing that her rebuffed suiter Edwin has died of a broken heart. These caricatures are not damning satire, but the artist's lightly acerbic wit bubbles below the drawing's refined surface.

Rev Walter Sneyd was one of six children of Lieutenant-Colonel Walter Sneyd (1752–1829) of Keele Hall, an ancient family of local consequence in Staffordshire. He was educated at Westminster and Christ Church, Oxford, graduating in 1831. Ordained in 1834, he took up a curacy at Begbroke near Woodstock, where he remained for the next thirty years. He was an ardent bibliophile and over his lifetime he formed an important collection of choice illuminated medieval manuscripts and early printed books.

Whilst at Oxford, Walter Sneyd wrote the humorous satirical work 'Portraits of the Spruggins Family / arranged by Richard Sucklethumkin Spruggins, Esq', published in 1829. The book, which includes numerous caricature drawings by Sneyd, is a parody of contemporary family histories and similar works of 19th-century antiquaries, genealogists and art historians. Its humour is very much in the vein of 18th-century British satire which characterised much literature in Britain in the long 18th-century.

A reading of 'Portraits of the Spruggins Family', with its light-hearted mockery of pomposity and pretension, brings particular life and character to the present drawing, which also presents the upper classes in a lightly humorous way.
