An original early 19th-century watercolour painting Devil's Glen, Co Wicklow, Ireland.

A delightful miniature watercolour showing the dramatic narrow gorge named Devil's Glen in County Wicklow, so-called for being seemingly stamped out of the hills by the cloven hoof of the Devil. The site was extremely popular in the Victorian era, and prior to the construction of the Vartry Reservoir in the 1860s, the Vartry River rushed majestically through its depths, roaring so loud that locals said the Evil One was howling for sinners down there.

In this exquisite miniature composition two tiny figures and a rider on horseback provide a sense of the landscape's grand scale.

Provenance: From the Collection of Dr E.M. Brett of Hampstead.

On card.
