Landscapes of the Seine, Rhine, Moselle & Channel Islands: G.G. McL 1870s

This painting forms part of a collection of works produced by a talented late 19th-century hand during travels to some of the less frequently painted sites of Northern Europe: on the Seine in Normandy, on the River Moselle in Germany and in Rhineland-Palatinate, as well as on the Channel Islands of Jersey, Guernsey and Sark.

The artist appears to have had a particular interest in regional church architecture, Roman ruins and geological topography, recording sites such as Graville Abbey at Le Havre, the Porta Nigra at Trier and basalt rock formations at Eifel. The Channel Island subjects include the Neolithic dolmens of Jersey, as well as coastal rocks on Guernsey and Sark.

The artist's initials are 'G.G. McL', but sadly there is insufficient additional information to identify them.
