An original early 19th-century watercolour painting – Hon. Waller O'Grady, Castlegarde Castle, Co. Limerick.
A delightful drawing from the Irish aristocratic O'Grady / Vereker family.
Waller O’Grady was son of Standish O'Grady, 1st Viscount Guillamore. He bought Castlegarde Castle, Co. Limerick, the oldest continually inhabited castle in Ireland, in 1820. He commissioned the architect siblings James and George Pain to restore and enlarge the building in baronial style.
Here he envisions a romantic scene, where the tower is enveloped in ivy and a medieval battle scene unfolds in the foreground.
This drawing is one of a fascinating collection of works that we have for sale connected with the aristocratic O'Grady and Vereker families of 19th-century Ireland.
