And this drawing, focusing intensely on the face of the father Horatii, embodies the high emotion and drama for which David’s painting was celebrated.

David’s painting tells the story of a Roman legend first recounted by Livy, involving a conflict between the Romans and a rival group from nearby Alba. Rather than the cityies going to war, each elects three men to settle their dispute—the Romans choosing the Horatii brother and the Albans choosing the Curatii brothers. In David’s painting the three Horatii salute their father in an oath to defend Rome, in doing so pledging to sacrifice their lives for the good of the city.

The painting is an “exemplum virtutis”—an illustration of courage and virtue—and as such, is held up as the manifesto of the Neoclassical movement. Furthermore, painted five years before the French Revolution, it manifests a progressive Enlightenment ideals, which eventually contributed to the overthrowing of the monarchy. By isolating the father’s face, our artist distils David’s theme into one look—the figure’s eyes seemingly bearing the full weight of the woes of brethren, city and society.

The choice of black chalk is interesting as this was the medium in which David executed many preparatory studies for his painting. In 1784 he travelled to Italy to prepare for the painting, where he produced numerous black chalk sketches from life, including figure studies and copies from classical originals and old masters. This chalk drawing is highly polished rather than preparatory in nature, but its medium, allowing for high drama with white chalk highlights and scratching out, is nevertheless in keeping with the original artist’s vision. The work was a preparatory sketch, dating from c.1503-4, for Leonardo's (now lost) mural painting of the Battle of Anghiari, in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. These studies focus especially on the frenzied heads of horses caught up in the battle, as well expressions of fury in a man and a lion. Leonardo's original study was drawn in pen and ink with wash and red chalk. This later drawing in pen and ink is on tracing paper, beautifully executed with great fluidity to exact actual size, but entirely in the reverse of Leonardo's drawing. It is unclear quite how the artist produced this copy—whether it was from access to and viewing of the original drawing itself, or a life-size reproduction. The Royal Palaces were increasingly open to the public from 1825, when the first official visitors' entrance was created, and in 1837 when Queen Victoria came to the throne and introduced tickets for visitors and specially staffed tours. The Leonardo drawing, however, being a study, may not have been on display, and also is relatively unlikely to have been reproduced at full scale in the 19th century.Whatever its origins, this drawing has clearly been specially conserved—tears to the tracing paper have been historically repaired, and the sheet has been mounted on a backing paper, which has then further been hinged on to a wash line paper mount.

An original 1797 pen & ink drawing, Charles Loraine-Smith, Loraine with Horse.

This small sketch in brown ink is by the celebrated horseman and horse painter Charles Loraine Smith (1751–1835), of Enderby Hall in Leicestershire. Whilst Bowles is often overshadowed by her better-known husband, Poet Laureate Robert Southey, she was a poet of great merit in her own right and among the more influential women writers who produced their best work at the threshold of the Victorian era. This idyllic view, with flowers in bloom and white birds feeding on the lawn, communicates the great affection Bowles held for her childhood home, and the comfort it represented in a life marred by tragedy. Born at Buckland Manor, Caroline was the only child of Captain Charles Bowles and Anne Burrard, member of the important Burrard family of Lymington, Hampshire. Her melancholic father moved the family to the much smaller Buckland cottage when she was a child, and Caroline spent summers by the sea at Calshot Castle, home of her uncle, Sir Harry Burrard, 1st Baronet, of Walhampton. She showed artistic talent young, and was taught by artist William Gilpin (the local parson)—who is best known as one of the originators of the idea of the picturesque. Her mother's death in 1816 left the family destitute, leaving Caroline alone and only able to continue living in the family home due to an annuity from her father's adopted son, Colonel Bruce. Financial need drove her to contact the Poet Laureate, Robert Southey, who had a reputation for helping working-class and women poets. Southey encouraged her poetic talent and the two corresponded prolifically by letter. Following the death of Southey's first wife, in 1838, they were married in 1840, and Caroline went to live at Greta Hall in Keswick (where Southey lived along with Samuel Taylor Coleridge and his family). Sadly, soon after, Southey became senile, unable to read, write, or talk, and died in 1843, upon which Caroline returned to Buckland Cottage, where she ceased to write. This drawing comes from a collection of works relating to the Burrard family and is inscribed on the backing paper 'Buckland. The frontispiece for this volume is another portrait of Caroline with her dog, which strongly resembles the present drawing (see photograph). Caroline and Southey affectionately mention her two dogs in their correspondence. Caroline writes: 'I am no longer solitary in my walks nor by my fireside. I have a beautiful small spaniel ''the prettiest of his race and high in pedigree,''', and Southey writes: 'My respects to Mufti. The Townshends have brought a dog with them as ridiculously little as his Muftiship is formid-ably large, and this ridiculous dog walks out with them, as Mufti does with you.'This drawing comes from a collection of works relating to the Burrard family and is inscribed on the backing paper 'Caroline Bowles by herself. given me by Mrs Levett, L.B.'. This is Laura Burrard, (either Caroline's cousin, d.1880, or cousin's daughter b.1831/3). Richard Wilson RA (1714–1782) was an influential Welsh landscape painter, who is considered the ’father’ of British landscape painting, and was a major influence on J.M.W. Turner and John Constable.

Richard Wilson is best known for his Italianate landscapes, influenced by the grand classical style of Poussin, Claude and Zuccarelli. Wilson was born in Penegoes, Montgomeryshire but moved to London in 1729 to train under Thomas Wright. In 1750 he left London for Rome where he remained until 1757, and it was this period in Italy which was to be most influential on Wilson’s developing landscape style. Drawing was important to Wilson, and his preferred medium was black chalk and stump on a grey paper. Many of Wilson’s landscape oil paintings were based on the large number of drawings that he made during his Italian sojourn.

Wilson painted the subject of Cicero at his villa on three occasions, this drawing closest to the version now in the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford. William Woollett (1735–1785) also published an engraving after Wilson of the subject in 1778. The drawing shows the Roman orator Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 BC) conversing with his friend Quintus and his brother Atticus at Arpinum. The villa of Cicero's birth is visible in the distance, where Cicero goes for 'undisturbed meditation, or uninterrupted reading or writing'. The friends remark on how the serenity of the landscape inspires them with wisdom and creativity, and in turn, Cicero extrapolates his ideals for social order in Rome.

This drawing, intriguingly, is accompanied by a heavier cream wove backing sheet inscribed ‘RWf. Sir James Thornhill, Allegorical Studies.

This profusive sheet of studies in ink and graphite is attributed to the masterful decorative painter Sir James Thornhill (1675/6–1734), who worked in the Italian Baroque style at the beginning of the 18th century. We acquired the drawing with this attribution and with the provenance of William Drummond (Covent Garden Gallery, London), the renowned British drawings and watercolours dealer.

Sir James Thornhill was the foremost decorative painter in England, earning him a knighthood and appointment as history painter-in-ordinary (1718) and sergeant-painter (1720) to the king. His great decorative schemes included the 'Painted Hall' at the Royal Hospital, Greenwich, the paintings on the inside of the dome of St Paul's Cathedral, the chapel ceiling of Queen’s College Oxford, the hall of Blenheim Palace, and works at Chatsworth House and Wimpole Hall. Notably, Thornhill rose to eminence against the prevailing dominance of foreign decorative painters, who received almost all commissions for such work.

Thornhill's large-scale compositions comprised figures commonly shown in idealised and rhetorical postures. Narrative elements of classical allegory would be combined with topical events relevant to the patron; for example, his design for the ceiling of the Queen Anne room at Hampton Court shows Queen Anne surrounded by allegorical figures representing Providence, Virtues, Arts and Sciences, Empire.

Our sheet of drawings has the vigorous spontaneity of an imaginative, preliminary sketching process: the page jostles with nude figures alluding to various classical allegories such as The Three Graces, Atlas, Athena, bacchantes with drinking vessels and figures with lyres. The composition nevertheless achieves a sense of coherence and depth, anchored by obelisks and trees within the 'landscape'.

The studies are quite possibly preliminary workings for an interior mural scheme, or they may have connection with design work that Thornhill did for the Chelsea Porcelain Factory. Intriguingly, the sheet bears a faint inscription within the graphite underdrawing at the upper left which reads 'Nollekens'—presumably a reference to Joseph Francis Nollekens, or ‘Old Nollekens’ (1702–1748), the Antwerp-born painter in London. Old Nollekens and Thornhill both did decorative work for the china manufactory in Chelsea, as recalled by his son, the sculptor Joseph Nollekens, in the 1895 publication 'Nollekens and his Times' by John Thomas Smith. The designs of Chelsea porcelain at this time drew much inspiration from the elaborate French decorative style of the Sèvres manufactory, which was born out of the luxurious demands of the Ancien Regime.

On laid paper with simple fleur-de-lis watermark.

There is an ink sketch of a face on the verso.

Provenance: William Drummond (Covent Garden Gallery, London).

An original early 19th-century pen & ink drawing, Circle of Henry Fuseli RA, A Rampaging Giant.

This dramatic ink and wash drawing shows the figure of a giant wielding a tree trunk held aloft, with two diminutive figures below. The sitters are Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales (1796–1817), heiress to the British throne, and Leopold I, King of the Belgians (1831–1865), whom Charlotte married as Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg in 1816. Princess Charlotte was the only legitimate child of King George IV. After a year of marriage to Leopold she tragically died aged twenty-one following childbirth. Had she outlived her grandfather and father she would have become Queen of the United Kingdom. Charlotte's death set off tremendous mourning among the British public, who had seen her as a sign of hope in contrast to her unpopular father and grandfather. She was considered a 'well-set, young beautiful woman' and was painted by Sir Thomas Lawrence, Richard Cosway and her appointed miniaturist Charlotte Jones. Leopold I, King of the Belgians, was a German prince who fought in the Russian army. Following Belgium's independence from the Netherlands in 1830, he became the first King of the Belgians. Prince Leopold was known for his dashing good looks and after Princess Charlotte's death he continued to enjoy considerable status in Britain and was beloved amongst the public as her 'afflicted consort'. In 1840 Leopold arranged the marriage of his niece, Queen Victoria, to his nephew, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and he went on to act as an advisor to his niece for many years. Leopold was widely painted by artists, including Sir Thomas Lawrence, Sir George Hayter, Alfred Edward Chalon and George Dawe. The present portraits are after paintings by English portraitist George Dawe RA, which were popularly reproduced as mezzotints in the day. The Princess Charlotte portrait is after a mezzotint by William Say after George Dawe, 1817, and the King Leopold painting is after a mezzotint by Henry Edward Dawe after George Dawe, circa 1817.George Dyer is listed as being a professional portrait miniature painter, active 1821-47 and local to the Sussex area, located at Brighton (1822) and Worthing (1826). The scale of this work is larger than a miniature, but the artist's skill as a miniaturist is greatly in evidence: in the particularly fine treatment of facial features and hair, the exquisite bodycolour detailing to Charlotte's lace neckline, and the overall intensity and focus of the compositions. Both paintings are in watercolour with touches of gum arabic and white bodycolour. Nash brought his architectural subjects to life by the inclusion of groups of people. The figures depicted here date the subject to c.1850, and include scholars in academic dress, deliberately indicating—it would seem fair to conclude—that the building is in some way connected university or academic life. The building facade itself is in the Perpendicular Gothic style, and the building is surrounded by grounds or parkland.

There is fine underdrawing in pencil beneath the watercolour, but the work does not have the technicality of an actual architectural design; it could rather be a design for reproduction in print—there were numerous illustrated volumes of British topography, such as those of printseller Rudolph Ackermann, produced at that time.
