One of four miniature studies that we have for sale in the style of the preeminent 19th-century British animal painter Sir Edwin Landseer RA (1802–1873).

Landseer's art was hugely influential in popularising sentimental animal subjects and romanticising the notion of Scotland amongst the Victorian public.

Provenance: from an album belonging to Florence Alliston (1855–1886), daughter of Sir Frederick Prat Alliston (1832–1912), Alderman of the City of London.
