Attributed on the verso to James Holland (1799–1870). Venice was an extremely popular artistic subject throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth century. One of the things that is unusual about this fine study, however, is the fact that it takes a relatively little-known corner of the city as its subject. Rather than the Grand Canal or St Mark's Square, this is a sketch of a fruit shop. The artist uses minimal means to trace the lines of the buildings: he is clearly interested in the shapes of a number of different Gothic arches, in particular.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOn cream wove paper with distinctive watermark of a shield with a device of two clasped hands over an orb.
