Attrib. William Henry Bartlett Guildhall, Fore Street, Exeter
An original c.1829 watercolour painting, Attrib. William Henry Bartlett, Guildhall, Fore Street, Exeter.
A bustling and intricately detailed street scene attributed to the prolific topographical artist William Henry Bartlett (1809–1854). Bartlett was a leading writer and illustrator of picturesque travel books during the early Victorian era. This scene in the heart of old Exeter on market day was produced for the part-work series 'Devonshire Illustrated' (1828–32), in which it was reproduced as an engraving. The way in which the architecture is delineated, in free-hand watercolour with little or no underdrawing, is consistent with Bartlett's work. There is another Exeter street scene by Bartlett in the collection of the British Museum (no.1880,1113.2862).
