An original 1932 watercolour painting, Baron Scotford, Silhouette Paper Cut of a Nun.
A wonderful paper cut silhouette by the celebrated American silhouette artist Baron Scotford.
Baron Scotford cut freehand silhouette profiles for over 30 years, between about 1910 to 1940. Scotford settled in England around 1912, working in London first from a studio in Regents Street, and later from Crystal Palace. He returned to America before World War Two.
Scotford's silhouettes can be found in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
This silhouette represents his mature period by which time he had developed a technique to highlight interior details, called 'slash work'. It is a large example of Scotford's work, and unusually appears to represent a nun, cutting a striking and unmistakable figure.
In cut black paper on cream wove with Scotford's blindstamp crest at the lower left corner.
