An original 1859 lithograph print Dieppe; establissement du bains de mer.
This interesting hand-coloured lithograph shows the popular seaside resort of Dieppe in the 1850s.
The popularity of sea baths for therapeutic purposes reached France at the end of the 18th century, and between 1809 and 1812 bathing was first established in Dieppe. It was not until 1822 that the real first 'bathing establishment' of France was installed on the beach, along with a bathroom with triumphal arch and pavilions, and wooden pontoons leading directly to the beach. By 1859, the date of this print, sea bathing was in full vogue, made especially popular in Dieppe by illustrious visitors including the Marie-Caroline, Duchess of Berry, in the 1820s, and Queen Hortense de Beauharnais (1783–1837).
Trimmed to the image and laid down on backing paper.
