An original mid-20th-century watercolour painting – G.D. Paulraj, Mattu Vandi on the Mowbrays Road, Alwarpet, Madras, India.

This beautiful large composition by G.D. Paulraj (1914–1979) shows a traditional train of bullock carts on the tree-lined avenue once named Mowbrays Road in Alwarpet, Madras (Chennai), now renamed T.T. Krishnamachari Road. Paulraj lived in the Seethamma Colony off the Mowbrays Road.

Paulraj's paintings are celebrated for their observation of everyday life and their atmospheric technique in watercolour, utilising the white of the paper to achieve luminous highlights rather than mixing white paint.

This is one of two paintings by G.D. Paulraj that we have for sale (see stock number KE-049).
