After the Masters: 19th-century Sketches on Blue Paper

This interesting collection comprises miniature 19th-century sketches in watercolour and bodycolour on blue paper. The studies are copies after a number of Masters, from Rembrandt through to Turner. The Winsor & Newton sketchbook paper, which bears a cover label 'To Her Majesty, & H.R.H. the Prince of Wales', possibly dates the sketches to around 1862, after the death of Prince Albert in 1861 but before the marriage of the Prince of Wales in 1863.

The sketches demonstrate a freedom of brushstroke and a focus on clouds and sunsets that evokes the studies of J.M.W. Turner (1775–1851) and John Constable (1776–1837) in particular. Additionally, the use of bodycolour on blue paper is undoubtedly inspired by Turner, who experimented with opaque gouache on coloured papers to break free from tradition and create dazzling effects.

This was clearly an artist keen to learn from the Masters, and someone who sketched at South Kensington and the National Gallery, where the Turner Bequest was held at this time. Their interest also extends to Dutch Masters, Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) and Pieter de Hooch (1629–1684) and the works of Thomas Gainsborough (1727–1788). Further annotations with the sketches reference Titian and Wilkie.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0930/4306/5161/collections/TC167-JZ-299.jpg?v=1742299044
https://somersetandwood.com/fr/collections/after-the-masters-19th-century-sketches-on-blue-paper.oembed
