Italian Riviera Watercolours: Bordighera 1910–1912

This select group of watercolours depict views on the Italian Riviera between 1910 and 1912. The artist's monogram is indistinct, possibly JHB—but they were almost certainly a member of the English community at Bordighera, either visiting or resident. In the late 19th century Bordighera had become almost an English colony; English outnumbered the native Italians, with many of the seasonal visitors who flocked there for the winter sun becoming permanent residents. Devotees included many artists, writers and intellectuals, along with Royals such as Victoria, Princess Royal and Margherita of Savoy.

Painting from late winter into spring (February to May) over three consecutive years (1910 to 1912), our artist's views encompass the nearby sites of Bordighera, Ventimiglia, Sasso and the Roja and Bevera Valleys, and, in 1912, visits to Genoa and Lake Como. The paintings employ a saturated palette of turquoise, purple, terracotta, light green and white that captures the Riviera's brilliant luminosity, and the observed details—locals at work, monks out walking, a horse-and-cart on the beach—convey the traditional Ligurian ways of life, which held so much charm for the English tourist.
