An original early 19th-century pen & ink drawing Caricature Study Man in Doublet & Breeches.

This intriguing ink sketch appears to be a caricatural profile portrait of a man in 17th-century dress, in doublet, cape and breeches. This watercolour formed part of a collection of works which included paintings by, or from the circle of, various artists of the period such as Paul Sandby RA, John Varley OWS, John Sell Cotman and Richard Westall. On a smooth, thin, pale grey wove paper, apparently from a sketchbook. Whilst there is no accompanying information about the provenance, it has clearly been carefully preserved: the drawing is presented in a grey window mount, as shown, secured to the backing card with hinging tape at the upper edge of the sheet. On the verso of the sheet there are slight abrasions to the four corners, suggesting that it had previously been laid down on another backing sheet.
