Anstey's Cove, Torquay Devon - 1870s watercolour painting

An original 1870s watercolour painting, Anstey's Cove, Torquay Devon.

A delightful watercolour landscape. Anstey's Cove is a single secluded beach on the coastal path between Torquay and Babbacome with beautiful views across Lyme Bay to the Dorset coast. On watercolour paper.

Unsigned. Inscribed on a separate fragment of card.
Very minor foxing and some light age toning as shown. Glue and paper remnants around the periphery verso, due to previous historical mounting. Otherwise, in good condition.
16.4cm x 23.6cm.

This work is one of a collection of watercolour paintings from the 1870s that traverse both land and sea along the Pembrokeshire and Devon Coast, with the occasional foray further afield to the snow capped mountains of Switzerland. The focus appears to be on chromatic and textural contrast - between stone and sand, earth and sky, nature and architecture. The colours are subtle and with a shimmering tonality, and are a pleasing addition to the nineteenth century British landscape tradition.
