An original early 20th-century watercolour painting, Arderne Clarence Fishing Boats off Coast.

A vivid seascape by Arderne Clarence, depicting fishing boats among the swelling waves. There is lovely detail to the foreground boat and shoreline, whilst the distant horizon recedes in a palette of dusky purple-blues. Laid down on card.

Arderne Clarence (1882-1966) was born in South Africa but returned to England with his mother at an early age. He was educated at Rugby School and Exeter College, Oxford in 1901. He then went on to study art in Paris and under Frank Brangwyn. Clarence served in France during the First World War and also went on a Grand Tour, developing a love of travel. He had links with Cornwall and specifically the St Ives Society of Artists.
