Arthur E. Davies RBA RCA Blakeney Windmill, Norfolk
An original 1931 watercolour painting, Arthur E. Davies RBA RCA, Blakeney Windmill, Norfolk.
A beautifully atmospheric watercolour by Norfolk artist Arthur Edward Davies RBA RCA (1893–1988). The view shows Blakeney tower corn windmill, just to the east of the village of Blakeney in Norfolk. The painting shows the mill in the 1930s, when its sails, dome and finial were still intact. Blakeney tower mill has been described as the oldest tower corn windmill standing in Norfolk. A similar view was painted by the East Anglian artist Edward Seagol in 1936.
Arthur E. Davies is famous for his Norfolk landscapes, which capture the ethereal quality of the region’s expansive fens, punctuated by the historic mills which are a testament to centuries of human industrial and agricultural effort.
