Arthur Simpson, Starling's Cottage, Thornaby-on-Tees -1930s watercolour painting

£42.00

An original 1930s watercolour painting, Arthur Simpson Starling's Cottage, Thornaby-on-Tees.

A delightful watercolour in a beautifully loose, almost impressionistic, style. Recording the area around Thornaby-on-Tees in North Yorkshire, on the south bank of the River Tees, it captures a bygone, more pastoral age. On buff Dixon's David Cox Drawing paper. There is an additional watercolour on the verso, as shown, depicting a river landscape view on the Tees looking towards Thornaby.

Unsigned.
In good condition for its age. There are tiny pinholes to the four corners.
27.8cm x 38.1cm.
Unframed.

This painting is one of a collection of works we have for sale by Arthur Simpson, depicting the rural landscapes around Thornaby-on-Tees, Yarm and Eaglescliffe on the North Yorkshire/County Durham border, and across to the coast at Whitby. Quite clearly the work of a local man, these pictures pay attention to local detail, including hidden farm buildings, intimate rear garden views, secluded spots on the River Tees and the old Church of St Peter – as well as better known enduring landmarks such as Durham Cathedral and Whitby Abbey. A handwritten list of locations accompanying the collection further identifies specific houses, such as Glebe House, Starling’s Cottage, White House Farm, Thorntree Farm and Green Farm – many of which are now replaced by housing developments of the later 20th century. The artist’s inclusion of working figures, children, animals and sailboats gives a delightful sense of the lives lived in this rural corner of northern England in the early 20th century.
