An interesting watercolour study showing a rural view towards Reculver near Margate in Kent. The artist is presumed to be Henry Hawkins RA (active 1820-1881). There is a slight graphite sketch of figures on the verso of the paper. Laid down on backing paper, which is signed and inscribed 'Near Margate - Reculver in the distance. Henry Hawkins'.

There is an additional, unrelated verse inscribed on the verso of the backing paper.

In good condition for its age. The picture may have minor imperfections, such as slight marks, toning, foxing, creasing or pinholes, commensurate with age. Please see photos for detail.

Henry Hawkins entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1821 aged 25. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Society of British Artists between 1822 and 1880. He painted both portrait miniatures and full-scale oil portraits, as well as landscapes and genre subjects. His grand painting of the Penrhyn Slate Quarry is in the National Trust collection at Penrhyn Castle.
