From a collection of travel sketches by an unknown hand, dating from around 1900 (one of the paintings is dated on the verso). The artist, a keen documenter of his or her travels, was clearly a person of some means, staying at various hotels around Scotland and Egypt, including the Savoy Hotel on Elephantine Island. The palatial and opulent Savoy was built in January 1900, belonging to the Anglo-American Company, a recently formed Nile Steamer company, which transported boatloads of tourists up the Nile. Such developments were making the wilds of Egypt, its tombs and temples, newly accessible to the West – and this artist records these unfamiliar views with vigour and warmth. Closer to home, the stunning natural beauty of Scotland's West Coast is equally captured in vivid tones.
