C. Morant, A Windy Day - Original 19th-century oil painting

An original 19th-century oil painting, C. Morant A Windy Day.

This oil on panel depicts a captivating, atmospheric scene - a cloaked girl with basket and umbrella, on a rural road, battles against the wind under looming storm clouds. The trees and thatched cottages to the right are painted in an impressionistic style, whilst the figure draws the eye with greater realism. The sombre tones of the painting's main detail are lifted by the brighter skies glimpsed along the horizon - a hopeful reminder that storm clouds always pass.

Signed lower left.
Areas to the left-hand side of the painting and lower-centre have lost some of their vibrancy. The varnish along the outer edges is somewhat yellowed.
22cm x 36.9cm.
Unframed.

C. Morant was a figure and interior painter who exhibited 1886-1893 at the Royal Academy and Royal Institute of Oil Painters, London.
