Cat Study - Original 19th-century graphite drawing

8cm x 12cm.

This drawing forms part of an interesting larger collection of works, mainly in pen and ink, of varied landscape and figure subjects. Most appear to date from the late 19th century; one drawing is signed J.E. Compton 1879, others are dated 1861 and 1864. A number, on watermarked laid paper, are earlier. Some drawings have additions of graphite and wash. Many are studies, examining a variety of landscape compositions and the human form in different poses. One drawing is inscribed on the verso addressed to "A. Compton Esq, 29 Paultons Sq". Paultons Square is a prestigious address in London's Chelsea, so it appears that the drawings relate to a privileged family.
