Circle of Peter La Cave,Rural Scene with Figures & Cows,19th-century watercolour

An original early 19th-century watercolour painting, Circle of Peter La Cave Rural Scene with Figures & Cows.

An attractive work in watercolour from the circle of Peter La Cave (1769-c.1811). The charming rustic scene centres on the encounter between a traveller on horseback and a peasant woman walking with her cows on a rural track. The picturesque composition and, in particular, the background consisting of a church, trees and distant blue hillside, are especially characteristic of La Cave.

This is one of two works from La Cave’s circle that we have for sale, which we acquired together (see stock code JM-556). Laid down on a card wash line mount, with window cut verso.

Unsigned. Inscribed indistinctly verso with historic mounting instructions.
Some age toning, as shown. There is a repaired 4cm tear to the paper in the sky area upper left, and some reasonably faint crease lines to the paper - running obliquely at the left and horizontally upper left. A few further minor marks. Please see photos for detail.
23.5cm x 34cm.

Little is known about the biography of Peter La Cave (or Le Cave) (1769-c.1811), but he was a prolific watercolourist of rural life, his paintings focusing on groups of peasants, horses and cattle. He is believed to have been connected with a family of Dutch artists of French extraction. He was working in England from around 1789 to 1816, exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1801. He appears to have had connections with both Julius Caesar Ibbetson (1759-1817) and George Morland (1763-1804), the latter for whom he worked as an assistant. La Cave’s pencil drawings are considered particularly effective, John Sell Cotman having praised them in a letter to Turner in 1804. Cotman is thought to have studied La Cave’s depiction of cows in particular, tracing from La Cave’s drawings, for inclusion in his own work. J.R. Morris and John Thomas Gower are two artists believed to have been La Cave’s pupils.
