CM Hodges RWA, Crimean & Indian Mutiny Veteran - Early 20th-century oil painting




An original early 20th-century oil painting, C.M. Hodges ARCA RWA Crimean & Indian Mutiny Veteran.

This fine and imposing portait depicts a Somerset Regiment Veteran (1830-1916) of the Crimean and Indian Mutiny wars. His name, dates and regiment are partially visible on original labels on the back of the canvas and frame as shown. Details of the artist are also inscribed on one of the labels. The portrait is in its original substantial painted wooden frame with gilt slip. 

Initialled lower right.
There are three holes to the canvas: one upper left, one upper right, and one lower left. There are also a number of small patches of paint loss,as can be seen in the photo. The frame has some minor light marks and scratches.

Frame: 80 x 64cm.

C.M. Hodges ARCA RWA (1858-1916) was headmaster at Bath Government School of Art. In 1895 he moved to take a studio in London, at the prestigious location of 16 Old Bond Street, to pursue his professional practice as an artist. His work is in the collection of Victoria Art Gallery, Bath.
