This work is one of a collection of pictures by D. Clarke we have for sale. Many of the pictures bear a crossed out signature, which could be that of the prolific and diverse artist Derek Clarke MBE, RSA (1912-2014). Works in this collection share the vibrant colour and expressive style that was the signature of Clarke’s vast body of work, which spanned a career that ranged from pre-WWII to modern day.

Clarke studied at the Slade School of Art in London from 1931-35, after which he established himself as a portrait painter. During this period he fell in love with Scotland, but in 1939 war beckoned, and Clarke served as a soldier until he was injured in 1943. It was his exhibitions at the New English Art Club around this time when Stanley Spencer to take notice of him, praising his vivacity and colour energy. In 1947, Clarke was invited to join the staff at the Edinburgh College of Art, where he taught for thirty years. He continued to paint up until his death at the age of 101. A retrospective of his works was held at the Royal Scottish Academy in early 2014.

In the spirit of Clarke’s assertion that ‘Never… have I made two paintings the same… each work springs from a uniquely imagined inspiration’, these pictures share a similarly progressive, and sometimes contradictory, fusion of styles. This collection harnesses highly detailed architectural compositions with bold, bright Post-Impressionist style landscapes and expressive work in ink and gouache, sharing Clarke’s signature vivacity, creativity and energy.
