An original 1883 watercolour painting, Elsie M. Dudley Valerian Flower, Valeriana.
A delicate botanical watercolour study by Elsie (Eliza) Mary Dudley (d.1903), future wife of artist Thomas Campbell-Bennett (1858-1948). Dudley’s ancestor was Chancellor to Queen Elizabeth I.
The particular interest and charm of this painting lies in the detailed botanical notes that accompany it and its forming part of a collection of works which evidence horticultural knowledge being applied in the field: the ‘specimens’ collected for this project were observed and gathered at various locations around the UK - including at Dudley’s native Kinver in Staffordshire, and further afield at Conwy Castle and Penmaenmawr in North Wales, and Glen Lyon in Perthshire.
In most cases the specific location of the original specimen is recorded in the accompanying notes and also the name of the person who gathered the specimen - often this is Elsie herself, but sometimes it is others such as Thomas Campbell-Bennett.
The painting is accompanied by botanical notes in the artist's hand on a separate piece of paper, as shown. Please note that the inscription paper comes folded.
Initialled lower left.
In good condition for its age. The picture may have minor imperfections, such as slight marks, toning, foxing, creasing or pinholes, commensurate with age. Please see photos for detail.

Elsie Mary Dudley married artist Thomas Campbell-Bennett in Staffordshire in 1886. Bennett is recorded as having exhibited at RSA Birmingham from 1882 until 1906. By 1888 the couple had moved to Cornwall and bought Hingston House at St Ann's Chapel near Gunnislake. Elsie would have moved in artistic circles with her husband, in the acquaintance of Devon artists, Widgery, Pike and Ager. Bennett was a founder member of the Westward Ho! Art Club, Bideford, Devon.
This collection also includes a small number of botanical paintings by Thomas Campbell-Bennett, one of which is initialled and inscribed ‘TCB For Elsie’.
