An original 1954 watercolour painting, Frank Henry Mason RBA RI RSMA Arctic Scene.

This beautiful marine watercolour by Staithes group artist Frank Henry Mason RBA RI RSMA (1875-1965) displays the impressionist lightness of touch for which the artist is best known. It dates from the latter years of the artist’s life, in the years after the Second World War, and from Mason’s extensive travels around Europe. The painting typifies the Northern Impressionism for which the Staithes group were known.

Initialled lower right. Inscribed and dated lower left: 'Arctic Scene '54'.
The paper is somewhat age toned across the sheet, with additional scattered marks as shown. There is some creasing to the paper at the right, upper right corner, and upper edge, and short repaired tears to the upper edge, outside the image.

This painting is one of a collection of watercolours by Frank Henry Mason that we have for sale, depicting marine views around Scotland, Norway, Tenerife and north to the Arctic.

Frank Henry Mason (1875-1965) is best known for his maritime, shipping, coastal and harbour paintings. He was also a designer of art deco travel and railway posters in the 1920s and 30s. He was a founder member of the Staithes Art Club.

Born in Seaton Carew, Hartlepool, he was self-taught as an artist with no formal art training. His youth was spent as a naval cadet and then as a marine engineer, but by 1895 he had given this up to become a professional painter in Scarborough. He made regular trips to Staithes to meet with the arts community there, and in 1901 became a founder member of the Staithes Art Club. During World War One he was appointed a shipping war artist, then on his return worked in railway poster design, producing iconic images of travel in the interwar years.

Mason was elected to the Royal Society of British artists in 1904 and to the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1929. He exhibited at the Royal Academy regularly from 1902. His work has been exhibited at the National Maritime Museum and the Imperial War Museum.
