An original early 19th-century overpainted lithograph, Historical Spanish Soldiers.
A collection of four convivial lithograph prints, all with hand coloured overpainting, of various kinds of historical Spanish soldiers, some toasting a drink before battle. All are cut out and laid down on coloured backing paper. Due to the similarity in the subject matter, it is likely they are additional figures related to the prints laid down verso of another work we have for sale in this collection, JH-861.
Unsigned. Trimmed to the image.
Very minor foxing and some light age toning on all as shown. Two prints (blue paper) have glue and tape remnants on the lower edge of the backing paper and verso, due to historical mounting in an album. Otherwise, in good condition for the age.
20.2cm x 28.7cm.
This is one of a group of Victorian overpainted prints that we have for sale. The art of hand-colouring prints is a little-studied but distinct discipline, requiring skill and flair to be done successfully. Typically executed in watercolour or gouache, hand-colouring increases the impact of a black-and-white image, and can transform a print into something unique and personal. The painting of these prints is more extensive, detailed and vibrant than typical hand-colouring, meaning that, whilst originating as mezzotints or lithographs, many of these pictures appear almost as paintings in their own right.
