An original early 19th-century watercolour painting – Indian Company School, A Sowar Camel Rider.
A sweet Company School painting of a sowar, or camel rider.
Camels are native to the sandy plains of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan, and to a lesser extent, Gujarat and Haryana. By the 19th century, the one-humped Arabian camel had become an essential pack animal for the British Army and the Indian Army, being better suited than horses to the terrain of the northern frontiers of British India.
In watercolour on thin wove paper.
