Nellie Roberts BC Admiral Jellicoe var Rosita Orchid
An original c.1930 watercolour painting, Nellie Roberts, BC Admiral Jellicoe var Rosita Orchid.
This remarkable orchid portrait is rendered with immense vibrancy and realism by Nellie Roberts (1872-1959), the first and longest serving Royal Horticultural Society Orchid Artist. The style in which the flower is portrayed would become the standard for orchid artists, being a frontal view of the flower at natural size, sometimes with a tinted background for emphasis, strikingly capturing the flower's delicate petal structure and symmetry. The majority of Nellie Roberts's paintings are in the RHS archive; orchid portraits by this celebrated artist rarely come to the market.
On watercolour board. With gum arabic to intensify the watercolour.
