This painting is from a collection of watercolours we have by P.J. Haughton, many of which depict landscapes around the North East of England. Haughton painted the Hartlepool coastal area in County Durham, including landmarks such as Hart Windmill and St Hilda’s Church - built by the Normans and for centuries known as the Jewel of Herterpol. Many of the scenes are quintessentially English, with old stone cottages, country gardens and rocky coastlines. Haughton’s painting style is crisp and clean, and the artist utilises contrast of light and dark to bring the landscape scenes to life – summer sunlight across parks and fields, glistening autumnal puddles on country lanes, and luminous snowy winter mornings.
