An original 1954 chalk drawing, Spanish Matador.
This intriguing drawing is indistinctly signed 'Jean H[?]' and dated 1954. There are additional indistinct inscriptions on the verso too. The image itself is very striking, apparently showing a Spanish matador, wearing a montera, red head scarf and yellow neck tie. The portrait's confident lines and bold colouring capture something of the poise and strength of the figure, whilst its shadowy, expressionistic quality also suggests a sense of mystery and the inscrutable. The choice of limited palette powerfully associates the portrait with its Spanish subject. Chalk over watercolour wash on watercolour paper.
Signed and dated lower right.
There is toning to the paper, visible on the verso, which does not affect the front. Also verso are historic glue stains, from previous mounting.
41.6cm x 27.3cm.
