William Moss, Boy Reading at Table by Gas Lamp – c.1930 gouache painting

An original c.1930 gouache painting, William Moss, Boy Reading at Table by Gas Lamp.

A charming 1930s interior scene in watercolour with gouache and gum arabic. The scene has a wonderful informality and intimacy, the young boy sitting sideways on the large chair, slumped—possibly even asleep—at the table. The flame light creates a sense of warmth, the furnishing relatively modest but comfortable.

The painting is signed William Moss, and a fragment of a label on the verso indicates a date of 'circa 1930'. The painting's focus on the private and everyday is evocative of the earlier work of Walter Sickert and his foreshadowing of the domestic interiors of the Kitchen Sink artists of the 1950s.

On board.
