S&W Collection

This fine collection of silhouette cut paper portraits date from around 1870. The portraits are meticulously cut from very thin black paper, mounted onto cream wove paper. The majority of the silhouettes are portraits of members of British aristocracy, with a number connected to the Royal Navy. Two of the silhouettes are imaginative scenes. The identity of the artist is unknown but they were clearly a talented hand.
