An original c.1828 watercolour painting – Indian Company School, Cenotaph of Mumtaz Mahal, Taj Mahal, Agra.
An exquisite Indian Company School painting showing the cenotaph of Mumtaz Mahal at the Taj Mahal. The cenotaph is decorated with semi-precious stones inlaid into marble in the pietra dura technique.
The Taj Mahal was built for Mumtaz Mahal (d.1632) by her husband, the Emperor Shah Jahan. Her actual tomb is in a chamber directly beneath the cenotaph.
This painting is a fine example of an Indian Company painting, produced for Western (especially British) patrons in India in the 19th century, many of whom were working for the East India Company. It displays the striking hybrid techniques which led to the categorisation of the ‘Company’ style as a School. While incorporating traditional elements from Rajput and Mughal painting, they were given a more 'western' appearance through their use of perspective and rounded modelling, as opposed to the more decorative, 'flatter' styles that had gone before.
On watermarked Brocklesby & Morbey 1828 cream wove paper.
Please note that the painting is identified on the verso as 'Tomb of Noor Jehan Begum in the Taj Mahall[sic] at Agra', but this appears to be incorrect; Empress Nur Jahan is buried in Lahore and although she had a mausoleum built at Agra for her parents (sometimes referred to as the 'Baby Taj'), their cenotaphs do not match this painting.
