> Sunderland, Frances Watson (1866–1949)

Frances Watson Sunderland (1866–1949) was born in Keighley, West Yorkshire, the daughter of Wilkinson Watson, a local butcher. She lived all her life in the town, studying at Keighley School of Art and Crafts, where she later taught for much of her working life. She was an active member of the Keighley Art Club and a familiar figure sketching in Keighley town centre, recording views that are today much changed. She also painted scenes at Whitby and along the North Yorkshire coast. Sunderland's paintings were widely exhibited, including at Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and the Royal Cambrian Academy. Her works are held in the collection of Bradford Museums & Galleries, at Cliffe Castle near Keighley.
