Attrib. Thomas Spinks Harbour Boats at Dusk

An original late 19th-century oil painting, Attrib. Thomas Spinks, Harbour Boats at Dusk.

A beautiful oil on wooden mahogany panel showing a tranquil harbour scene. The painting shimmers with light, capturing the soft glow of evening. The indistinct signature at the lower right appears to say Spinks.

Thomas Spinks (1847–1927) was a landscape painter who produced works of a similar style to those of Benjamin Williams Leader and William Henry Mander. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and Suffolk Street, Walker Gallery Liverpool and Manchester City Art Gallery between 1872 and 1907. He is known to have painted on mahogany panel.

Presented in a substantial, heavy antique wood and gesso gilt frame.

Condition: There is a faint horizontal line above-centre where a split across the panel has historically been professionally repaired. The high quality of the repair indicates the care that has been taken to restore the painting. There is a further faint horizontal hairline crack to the paint surface, just below centre. The overall impression of the condition is nevertheless good. Some wear to the gilt on the frame and minor knocks to the gesso, including some losses to the beading to the outer edge.
