An original early 19th-century watercolour painting, Circle of James Ward RA, Trees by Rocky Path with Figure.
This accomplished watercolour painting is tentatively attributed on the verso by a later hand to 'J. Ward'. The treatment of trees and overall composition strongly resembles the celebrated artist James Ward RA (1769–1859) in his 1789 oil painting 'In the Forest', and also in various tree studies in pencil by the artist. Whilst its composition differs, 'In the Forest' also features a small red cloaked figure.
James Ward was an immensely talented artist who excelled at a wide range of subjects, but is best known for his animal paintings.
In watercolour with scratching out and gum arabic to intensify the colour.
