An original 1838 watercolour painting Les Artistes after Paul Gavarni.

A wonderful satirical subject after a lithograph by the French artist Paul Gavarni (pseudonym of Guillaume Sulpice Chevallier) (1804–1866).

Delicately painted in grisaille watercolour.

The original lithograph is one of a series of sixteen produced by Gavarni in 1838 titled 'Les Artistes', in which he satirises the clash of bohemian and bourgeois culture. You see, comrade, this is how you will always find true Artists... sharing everything as brothers... good and bad fortune, everything!... your stew is excellent. —Yes, but comrade you don't leave me any.'

In the 1830s Gavarni began to work for L'Artiste, La Caricature and Le Charivari. Along with Honoré Daumier he raised the status and importance of social lithography and printmaking in France in the 19th century. He was esteemed by such artists and writers as Vincent van Gogh, Edgar Degas and Honoré de Balzac.
