Manner of Camille Pissarro Haystacks in a Field
An original late 19th-century oil painting, Manner of Camille Pissarro, Haystacks in a Field.
This beautiful, luminous oil painting on unstretched canvas is very reminiscent of the work of Camille Pissarro (1830–1903), a central figure in French Impressionism. It is particularly evocative of 'Open Fields with Haystacks near Pontoise', 1873 (National Gallery of Art) and also the view 'L'Eté' from his series of the four seasons, executed in 1872 and the first half of 1873.
Like in the work of the great Impressionist, here we see, unusually, colour is used in the shadows of the haystacks, and the foreground wildflowers are represented by just the merest of dabs.
Tantalising, the canvas appears to be indistinctly initialled in black at the lower left corner, possibly P? It is also inscribed '4' as if part of a series.
