Anon. Parkland on Lake Geneva, Switzerland
An original mid-19th-century watercolour painting Parkland on Lake Geneva, Switzerland.
This unusual large watercolour depicts an unconventional view towards Lake Geneva in Switzerland, focusing instead on the estate parkland on the lake's banks. The traditional barque boats in the distance hint at the location, but the artist depicts with meticulous detail the early autumn tree foliage, grazing cattle, and a young girl walking along the long driveway, presumably leading to a grand Victorian villa.
The inclusion of the young child suggests that this is a more personal view, the artist having some closer connection to the landscape than that of a tourist. The painting is unsigned, but derives from an early Victorian album of exceptional quality, previously uncatalogued.
In watercolour with bodycolour highlights.
