An original mid-19th-century graphite drawing Victorian Ladies in Orientalist Setting.

An artfully composed graphite sketch, combining elements of British portraiture with 'Orientalism', in the harem-style pose, clothing and ostrich fan.

The pose with the ostrich fan and the staged backdrop with possibly the Nile, resembles subjects by Sir David Wilkie (1785–1841), who travelled to the Middle East in 1840. Fair-skinned women in a harem setting are a recurring image in ‘Orientalist’ paintings, with many fashionable European ladies posing for similar portraits.

Provenance: William Drummond (Covent Garden Gallery, London).
