An original 1989 watercolour painting, Stanley Reece, Yellow Lampshade Poppy Flower (Meconopsis Integrifolia: Papaveraceae).

This large and impressive watercolour is by the esteemed English engraver Stanley Reece (1932–c.2010). Dating from around 1989, it is thought to be a study of a plant at Kew Gardens, which Reece would later engrave onto copper-plates. The composition, with decorative calligraphy below, has a strong graphic quality as well as being finely painted and delicately coloured.

In watercolour with graphite.

Stanley Reece (1932–c.2010)

This painting is one of a collection of botanical prints and watercolours that we have for sale by Stanley Reece (1932–c.2010). Reece was an engraver working in London in the 1970s and 1980s. He was a teacher of engraving at the Sir John Cass School of Art, where his students included David Wilkinson, who went on to become Head of Engraving at Tiffany & Co., and Robert Goldsworthy, with whom Reece collaborated and shared a studio in Clerkenwell. They worked for a variety of clients both in the UK and abroad with many projects and commissions for the Middle East. Reece also designed banknotes and he produced many copper-engraved bookplates and ex-libris. The silversmith Clive Burr described Reece as 'a superb engraver. His calligraphy was amazing, beautiful.'

There are nine prints by Stanley Reece in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
