Sailboats of the Thames & Isle of Wight: 1880s Watercolours

This work is part of a series of small, picturesque works in ink and watercolour of nautical, seascape and coastal landscape views from the 1880s, mainly from the Isle of Wight. The pen and ink drawings are done with a delicately fine tipped pen in a linear, engraving type style. The watercolours work on a similar principle, focusing on minute gradations of tone and line in a harmonious balance for their size. Given the similarity between the style and detail, it is likely they were all done by the same steady hand, while on idyllic travels around the English coast.
